URBAN RENEWAL
by Pastor Rick Sams

To be clear, this is not an article on city development. I’ll leave that to our newly elected mayors. This is about the question that most football fans in Ohio are asking: “What do you think about Urban Meyer coaching Ohio State?”

I like it. Who wouldn’t. He’s got two national championships on his resume. I hope he does well with the Bucks. We’d like someone to win besides our Purple Raiders. We can all wail our our theme Bible verses as NE Ohio sports fans: “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted…and His ears are attentive to their cries” (Psalm 34:15, 18).

But as most know our great coaching hope had some “Urban blight” in his Florida program, with players there being arrested for various infractions. He micro-managed his Gator team to the point of exhaustion and quitting. Workaholics are neither omnipotent nor omnipresent. He couldn’t watch over his players 24/7. Young men can find trouble if they want to.

So what do I think of Urban Meyer’s coaching at Ohio State? I’ll press the “play” button on the recording I’ll run every time someone asks: “There is only one Savior, and His name is NOT Urban. His name is Jesus.”

“And you will call His name Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21).
